Day 54: Lake Lure Vacation
Jeff and I just got back from spending a few days at Lake Lure. We began our trip with our girl plus two — maybe not the beginning of a true vacation, but we stopped off at Camp Gravatt in lovely Aiken to drop Katie and her buds off for their annual camp fix. So Jeff and I spent 3 great days with no kids, no responsibilities, no stove, boat, dock, or washing machine! I planned an evening with my roommate from college Stefanie and her family followed by two nights at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa in Lake Lure, NC. Only about an hour and a half from Columbia, Lake Lure is not far from the NC border and I chose to go there because it was a) cooler than Charleston and b) cooler than McClellanville and c) cooler than SC! Also, it’s on the water and the hotel had a pool which I looked forward to lounging in and nearby.
We enjoyed some great food at restaurants we’d never been to before (No Chili’s, fast food or mart of any kind). We could have been eating toast and oatmeal because virtually every restaurant had a view of a river, mountain or lake — or all three, making all food taste even better. I remarked to Jeff that no matter how touristy Charleston, IOP or Lake Lure is, you can’t mess up a beautiful view. Is there anything we can do to screw up the view of the ocean, the mountains or a lake? Even airplanes over Myrtle Beach advertising $2 t-shirts can’t ruin the beauty and sheer size and force of the ocean. We are all little ants in comparison, and it is a good thing to be reminded (I think).
I would highly recommend our hotel (link above), but there were also lots of other cool places to stay, and no Days Inn or Sheraton! Every place is owned by real people — wow — I love it.
